Gary’s Tips – Clean2Gleam

Boat owners need to be aware of the damage that automotive cleaning products can cause to their boats.  For example, we cannot emphasise enough how harmful it is to use car polish on boats!

Marine Products go through rigorous scrutinisation before being allowed to go into the market place.  This involves environmental and material testing.  Boats are finished with a protective gel coating.  The marine products are tested to such a high standard, so they are safe to be used on a variety of boat finishes, you can then be assured your boat will not be damaged.  The result being a beautiful gleaming boat that is protected from the elements.

Always make sure that before entering a contract with a detailing company check that they have in place all the correct and up-to-date insurance, should an accident happen.

Clean2Gleam are covered by the IRCM's specialist Marine insurance.  It is imperative that you consider this extensive policy as it is far superior than the less expensive public liability insurance (which is at present the industry standard) and would not fully cover your vehicle should you discover any negligence/damage.  So be safe and fully covered by your contractor and only use those who have full liability insurance.

Winter months when your boat is on hard standing is when it is time to get working hard on cleaning and polishing the hull of your boat.  It is important to always wear protective clothing.  In particular, when using a compound machine you must include wearing breathing masks, goggles and gloves.

Prior to polishing/compounding it is important to invest in a good limescale remover, to remove all debris.  A quality chandler will recommend the correct product for your type of boat.

To achieve the best possible results on your gel coat and paint only use limescale remover around the water line, then wash off and dry.  Then apply a cutting paste, again one recommended from a boat chandlery.

It is very important to use a trip RCD box whilst working with a compounding machine.  Always gain permission at the marina prior to working on your boat, and explain the work you are intending to do.

Last but not least, for ultimate results, apply two coats of wax with a small adaptor sponge.  Finish with a microfiber towel, to remove the wax.
